St. Vincent is the band of singer-guitarist-composer Annie Clark, a former member of both Sufjan Stevens’ backing band and the Polyphoic Spree’s group. If you look at the album cover of her first solo album, Marry Me, you’d probably expect this album to consist of quirky, smooth tracks. However, I’m not sure it’s possible to expect exactly what this album gracefully delivers. The liners credit Clark with voices, bass, organ, piano, guitar, Moog, synthesizers, xylophone, clavieta, vibraphone, dulcimer, triangle, drum programming, and percussion. WOW - this woman is a god. If you didn’t think she was amazing before this album; I’m assuring you that you will now.
“Land Mines,” my favorite song of hers at the moment, has a smooth, alluring quality, making you feel as if you’re floating through the clouds. This feeling, in my opinion, produces a nice contrast with the lyrics which are by no means harsh, but a little more intense than the floating rhythm behind it.
All in all, I give it an A.
