I know I’ve probably written about Reefer Madness before, but I just love this movie. So, I’m writing about it again. I just watched the movie again, and I am absolutely obsessed with the soundtrack. It’s a bit of a weird musical, overshadowed a bit by Rocky Horror, but in my opinion, still a great movie.
For those of you that don’t know what it’s about, Reefer Madness was originally a propaganda film from the 30s warning parents about marijuana and how it’s the devil’s drug, even more addictive than heroin. It was picked up and turned into a satire and was later turned into a musical that ran live in both New York and Los Angeles. Most recently, it was released as Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical on Showtime.
Seriously, who doesn’t love a musical where children want to be just like Romeo and Juliet, not yet knowing how the story ends (and not yet knowing how true the story will be):
And on top of that, who doesn’t love a movie that takes an issue and completely turns it into a dark comedy? Does anyone remember Citizen Ruth? Well, this is completely different, but darkly funny as well. With one puff of reefer, a hit and run, manslaughter, suicide, rape, and a quick descent into madness is inevitable:
And, to top it off, Reefer Madness has a great cast. Check it out:
Who could ask for more? Who knows where this obsession comes from. Maybe it comes from the fact that Jeanne d’Arc plays a game show host of sorts (”I’m your host, Joan of Arc - no christian martyr works it harder”). Maybe it comes from the fact that I always wished I was talented enough to be a musical stage actress. Maybe it comes from my “everybody dreams of being a broadway star” life theory (long story… another day). Either way, it’s pure awesome. If you like musicals and appreciate the weird, be sure watch this movie. It won’t let you down.
"Beginnings are scary. Endings are usually sad, but it's what's in the middle that counts. So, when you find yourself at the beginning, just give hope a chance to float up. And it will."
