I said that I would eventually post something that delved into the life force that is my dock, so here goes:
- Finder - (obvious)
- Dashboard - (again, obvious) a couple of widgets i enjoy, however, are hula girl (i tend to have her set as a dancing jesus which sways nicely to my iTunes), the junior mint widget (for website tracking), chuck norris facts (always a good time), flappie (i kill him all the time… by accident, of course), istat pro (just a little monitoring), and, of course, the exploding dog widget (my daily dose of happiness).
- Stickies - (one again, obvious) - i generally keep a stack of these minimized in the top left corner of my screen. they include anything from random ideas to movies i want to watch. it keeps my scattered mind organized, like a moleskine for my computer.
- i think i shall keep this one to myself (it’s my own personal secret - if you’re in on my secret, good for you… if not, i’m sorry)
- GarageBand - i don’t use this program as often as i’d like, but i must admit, it’s pretty fun to play with from time to time
- iPhoto - considering i’m lacking a digital camera at the moment, this program is being neglected. but generally, it’s an easy way to store photos. it’s not fancy; it’s not awesome, by any means. but, it gets the job done.
- Toast Titanium - for those of you that don’t already know, this is the ultimate application for burning CDs and DVDs on your Mac. if you don’t have it, get it. enough said.
- pzizz - this is a piece of software i got a hold of recently due to my sleeping issues. basically, it’s a piece of software that creates audio soundtracks that help you to nap during the day or get to sleep at night. and, it’s fully customizeable. you can decide the length of the track you want, how loud the voice and music are, etc. i’ve only used it a couple of times so far, but it looks promising. maybe if i used it more often, i wouldn’t have these insomnia issues that i’m suffering from.

- Tangerine! - this is a nifty little piece of software from Potion Factory that “creates magical playlists.” it does so by analyzing the BPM and beat intensity of your music in iTunes, helping you more easily create playlists that fit the exact mood that you are looking for. it also integrates very nicely with iTunes, allowing you to save created playlists directly into your iTunes. the software itself is also only $24.95, which is a bargain if you’re a playlist fanatic, as i am. hell, it’s a bargain no matter what. so get to purchasing.
- Skitch - i’ve posted about skitch before, but, to put it simply, skitch is an screen-capturing software with some fun options, such as drawing on images, annotating images, etc. it really is a pretty neat program. it also has a myskitch feauture which gives you your own personal web space to display your images. i’m not sure if it is still not open to the general public, but if not, i still have one invite left, so if you want it, just holla at me and i’ll hook you up.
- Azureus - put simply, azureus is the best bit torrent client that i know of. if you don’t know what bit torrent is, then i’m truly sorry. look it up. if you do, be sure to check out this application. it’s free. yay.
- Soulseex - soulseex is a file-sharing application (used mostly for music)
- Adium - i’m pretty sure i’ve written about adium before, but it’s most definitely the best instant messenger application out there, allowing the integration of pretty much every time of instant messenger account available. also, it’s very customizable, which i enjoy. as you can see, i currently have my icon dressed as Les Paul (Slash Adiumy).
- Firefox - the best browser. period. kicks IE’s lame butt. if you don’t already know this, that makes me sad.
- iTunes - (another obvious mac app) i am currently using the DockArt plugin which displays the current album’s artwork as the icon (the one seen is Tiny Vipers - Hands Across The Void, which i highly enjoy).
- Journler - i’ve been using this journal application ever since it was released. i really enjoy all of the features (sound recording, video recording, ipod notes, etc.), amazing integration with other mac software, and it’s simple beauty. this software can be used for journaling specifically, or it can be used simply for organizing notes and such. also, development of this software is top notch, keeping it in with the times. and, at $10.00, it’s a steal. honest.
- Mail - although this is a standard piece of Mac software, i’ve always been a fan. it’s simple, easy to use, and integrates well with other IMAP and POP accounts. all of my mail in one place… instantly.
- Photo Booth - the perfect app for the easily amused (aka me)
- Cyberduck - i realize that there are a lot of FTP programs out there, but ever since i downloaded this program a couple of years back, i haven’t even attempted to search for a new or “better” piece of software. it’s easy to use, straightforward, and the icon is awesome. simple as that.
- VLC - this is a cross-platform media player. it’s free, simple, easy to use, and pure brilliance. and once again, the icon rocks.
- Cha-Ching - this is an easy to use money management software. it has a nice interface and is extremely straightforward. so far, i’ve been happy with it, although it does take time. you have to sit down and take the time to type in all of your separate expenditures, although regular bills can be scheduled and update automatically.
- AppZapper - this is an application that, in my opinion, every Mac owner needs. it’s simple and easy to use, and it eliminates those application files that you may not know ever existed, thus giving you true application removal. also, it has smart protection for those files and programs that might damage your computer if deleted, which is always nice. plus, it looks like a little toy gun and makes a fun little zappy sound when used. awesome.
- ViddyUp! - this program is a simple way to make video files (such as .avi) integrate with iTunes and, thus, playable on your iPod video. it’s extremely easy to use and very efficient. if you’re computer is cluttered with .avi files or any other file that isn’t compatible with iTunes, i definitely recommend you picking up this application. i’ve been using it almost daily since i got it.
- Podcast Maker - admittedly, i haven’t exactly used this application yet. i will say, however, that it looks hopeful.
- Snood - this has been my favorite computer game for years. it’s simple, easy, and fun. my favorite part about it is that it still looks the same way it did many years ago (tacky backgrounds and all). the support for it is awesome, but the graphics never change. that’s okay, though. not everything has to be perfectly beautiful.
Ever since I bought my new 15″ MacBook Pro, my dock has become larger and larger. I’ve got more screen space, man. Although I don’t really like clutter (I’m a bit of a control freak), I’ve left it as is for now. However, there is a program called Overflow, which I’ve written about before, that helps free up space on your dock (or as they say, “put your dock on a diet”). I haven’t gotten around to purchasing the license yet, but I’m sure I will in the near future. It’s very helpful, especially if you do a lot of work on the computer and need a good deal of programs regularly.
Anyway, that’s my shpeel for the day. Hope you enjoyed it. If not, I apologize. Well, not really because it was your choice to read, but even still.
don’t forget the flowers…
